Planning Your First Visit
Yes, and this is one of the most common situations our regulars started in. If you are driving through on US Route 20, recently moved to the area, or simply tired of chain restaurant breakfasts, Marengo Cafe is a sit-down alternative that actually delivers on the homemade promise. Everything is prepared fresh in-house, from the biscuits and gravy to the pasta sauce. Most first-time guests tell us the same thing: the portions are bigger than expected, the prices are fair, and the staff treats you like a regular within minutes.
This is exactly the kind of situation our menu was built for. If one person in your group wants something lighter, our Heart Healthy Choices section includes the Egg White Scrambler with spinach and feta, the Diet Delight Omelette, Steel Cut Oatmeal, and a Bowl of Fresh Fruit. If someone else wants a full country breakfast, the Meat Eater's Skillet, Ribeye Steak and Eggs, or a full order of biscuits and gravy will cover it. Add our Kids Menu for the younger ones and a table of five people with five completely different appetites can all find something they genuinely want.
We understand that not every visit is a leisurely one. Marengo Cafe is set up to move efficiently, especially earlier in the morning before the weekend rush builds. Simple orders like Fresh Grade AA Eggs with potatoes and toast, or a Breakfast Burrito stuffed with scrambled eggs, peppers, onions, and your choice of meat, are typically served quickly without sacrificing the from-scratch quality we are known for. If you are on a tight schedule, letting your server know when you sit down helps our kitchen prioritize your order.
Yes, and larger groups are a regular part of our weekends. Because our menu covers breakfast, lunch, salads, and pasta, a bigger table usually means more variety, not more difficulty finding something everyone wants. We recommend calling ahead at (815) 568-5341 if your group is six or more, especially on a Saturday or Sunday morning, so we can prepare seating and make sure everyone gets settled together.
You do not have to choose between a satisfying breakfast and a lighter one at Marengo Cafe. Our Heart Healthy Choices section was built specifically for this situation. The Egg White Scrambler combines egg whites with spinach, tomatoes, onions, and crumbled feta, served with fruit and toast so it actually fills you up. The Diet Delight Omelette uses broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and green peppers with a fruit side. Steel Cut Oatmeal, topped with raisins, pecans, bananas, or apples, is another filling choice that will not leave you feeling weighed down.
Our regular hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 am to 3 pm and Sunday from 7 am to 2 pm, and we are typically open through most holiday weekends unless otherwise posted. Holiday mornings tend to bring higher foot traffic since families are off work and looking for a sit-down breakfast together. If you want to avoid a wait, arriving earlier in the morning works well in practice, or simply call us at (815) 568-5341 to check on that specific day.
This comes up more often than you might expect, and our menu has enough range to handle it. For the simplest palates, a Plain Pancake or Short Stack, a Fresh Grade AA Egg with toast, a Ham and Cheese sandwich, or a Hamburger with fries from our Kids Menu are all reliable choices that do not ask much of a picky eater. Our staff are happy to point guests toward the most straightforward items on the menu.
